Do you know the difference between an alligator and a crocodile? They are both reptiles and look a bit like each other, but they are quite different.
Alligators are found only in China and the southeast United States. So right away, you know that if you’re in any other country and see this scaly scary reptile, you’re looking at a crocodile.
Most alligators live around fresh water marshes and lakes. Crocodiles live in saltwater and have glands to filter out the salt.
The easiest way to tell the two apart is to look at their noses. An alligator has a rounded U-shaped nose. A crocodile’s nose is pointed like a V.
Here’s a rhyme to help you remember which is which:
See you later, alligator. Your nose is rounded like a crater.
In a while, crocodile. Your nose is in a pointed style.
There are other differences too. Crocodiles can grow bigger than alligators, but alligators can swim and even run a bit faster.
Alligators are usually darker in color than crocodiles which are often olive green or tan.
Both of these reptiles are dangerous, but alligators are the more timid of the two. Don't let the crocodile's toothy grin fool you! They are very bad tempered and are much more likely to attack humans in their way. One of the most dangerous animals in the world is the Australian Saltwater Crocodile.
