Most people think that hamsters are just cute little pets. I am pretty cute, but there is a lot more to know about me.
My name is Jojo and I am a Golden hamster.
There are many different kinds of hamsters. Most pet hamsters are Golden.
Our great great great grandparents came from a far away desert in Syria. We didn't come to America until the 1970s. We were so cute that lots of people wanted us as pets.
We are called Golden hamsters, but we're not all golden. I am an orange brown color. So is my brother Peanut. My sister Daisy is white. My other sister Oreo is white and black.
In my family, full grown hamsters are about 8 inches long. We have short legs, a tiny tail, big eyes and big cheeks. We have little pockets in our cheeks to carry food around. Our wild cousins store insects, vegetables and fruit in their cheek pockets.
My teeth are scary. They never stop growing. I always need something around to chew on so that my teeth don't grow and grow and grow.
My eyes are not as good as yours. I can't see colors and I can't see more than a few inches in front of me. But don't worry. I can hear well and I have a great sense of smell to help me get around.
An important thing to know about me is that I'm "nocturnal" - a night animal. I like to play hard at night and then rest during the day.
I love to play on my spinning wheel. Some nights I run more than 6 miles. In my head I can hear my friends shouting, "Go Jojo Go!"Source: worksheetsplus.com/Reading/hamsterTalk.html If Hamsters Could Talk
