Cat Math

Kayla is six years old. She loves cats and she loves math.

One day when the class is learning how to add, the teacher asks, "If I give you 2 cats and 2 more cats plus another 2 cats, how many cats will you have?"

Kayla's hand goes up right away. She says, "I'll have 7 cats."

"No," says the teacher. "Listen carefully and count. I give you 2 cats plus 2 cats plus 2 more cats. How many cats will you have?"

"Seven!" shouts Kayla.

"I'm surprised," says the teacher. "You know how to add. Why do you think the answer is 7?"

Kayla says, "If you give me 2 cats plus 2 cats plus 2 more cats, that's 6 cats. But I already have a cat, so that makes 7!"
