The Turtle Burger

based on a true story from August 2013

Leo had a pet turtle named Pokey. When Leo went to visit his friends and relatives, he often took Pokey along.

Leo's mother lived in a city far away. He had to drive for 3 days to get there. When Leo heard that his mother was very sick, he wanted to get there as quickly as possible. That meant going by airplane.

Traveling by air was a big problem for Leo. Pet turtles were not allowed. Leo thought and thought and finally came up with a crazy plan. Even though it was against the law, he was going to disguise Pokey, hide him in his bag, and hope for the best.

When Leo's bag went through the airport x-ray machine, the officer noticed strange corners on what looked like a wrapped sandwich. When asked about it, Leo said, "It's just a hamburger."

The officer opened Leo's bag and saw the turtle's head sticking out of a brown wrapper. Leo was caught. The staff at the airport laughed so hard at the turtle disguised as a hamburger complete with cheese, tomato and lettuce, they only gave Leo a warning. Leo was able to call someone to pick up Pokey and look after him for a few days.
