The Turtle Burger

based on a true story from August 2013

Leo has a pet turtle named Pokey. When Leo visits his friends and relatives, he often takes Pokey along.

Leo's mother lives in a city far away. It takes three days to drive there. When Leo hears that his mother is very sick, he wants to get there as quickly as possible. That means going by airplane.

Leo has a big problem. Pet turtles are not allowed on airplanes. Leo thinks and thinks and comes up with a crazy idea. Even though it is against the law, he is going to disguise Pokey, hide him in his bag, and hope for the best.

When Leo's bag goes through the airport x-ray machine, the officer sees something that looks like a moving wrapped sandwich. When asked about it, Leo says, "It's just a hamburger."

The officer opens Leo's bag and sees the turtle's head sticking out of a brown wrapper. Leo is caught! The officer can't stop laughing at the turtle disguised as a hamburger complete with cheese, tomato and lettuce. She finds it so funny that she only gives Leo a warning. Leo is able to call someone to pick up Pokey and look after him for a few days.
