Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, is a fun Hindu celebration to mark the beginning of spring and to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. It is a time to have fun, let go of bad feelings, and to make new friends.
Holi began in ancient India and Nepal and is now celebrated by Hindus worldwide. The date of Holi changes each year depending on the full moon. It usually falls between the end of February and the middle of March.
The night before Holi, people gather around bonfires, sing and dance to say goodbye to winter.
The next day is when the real fun begins. Everyone goes into the street and throws colored powder and water at each other. Some use water pistols and water balloons. After a few hours, everyone is very wet and covered in a rainbow of colors. Some of the colors have meanings. Red means love and green means a new beginning.
After getting cleaned up, everyone gets together to share delicious food and continue to celebrate this happy holiday.
