National Hispanic Heritage Month is from September 15 to October 15. It is a time when the history, culture, and contributions of Americans with Hispanic background are celebrated.
What does Hispanic mean? Hispanic describes Americans whose families come from Spain, Mexico, and Spanish speaking countries in the Caribbean and Central and South America.
When did Hispanic Heritage Month start? In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson declared a Hispanic Heritage Week. Twenty years later, in 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the week to a 30 day period starting September 15.
Why September 15 to October 15? September 15 is important because it is Independence Day for many of the countries. Mexican Independence Day is on September 16, and Chile has its Independence Day on September 18. Columbus Day (Día de la Raza), which is October 12, also falls within this 30 day period.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, communities have festivals, special events, and activities to celebrate Hispanic people and their important influence on American culture and history.
