The Washington Monument

The Washington Monument was built to honor George Washington. It was built in Washington, D.C., close to the Capitol building.

Work on the monument started in 1848, more than 50 years after Washington served as the first president. The Washington Monument took 36 years to complete. Money problems and the Civil War caused many delays. It was finally completed in 1884.

The shape of the monument is an obelisk. An obelisk is a four-sided pillar that forms a pyramid at the top.

The monument is made of marble and is 555 feet high. It is the tallest building in Washington. When it was completed in 1884, it was the tallest building in the world. That record only lasted 3 years until 1887 when the Eiffel Tower was completed. It is 1,063 feet tall.

There are 897 steps that lead to the top. Visitors can also take an elevator to a lookout where they can see the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol, and the White House.
