The Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. is a very important place. It was built to honor what Lincoln did for his country. As the 16th president of the United States, he freed the slaves and kept the country together during the Civil War.
Lincoln died in 1865. In 1914, 49 years later, work began on the Lincoln Memorial. Eight years later, in 1922, the building opened.
The Lincoln Memorial was built to look like a Greek temple. It has 36 columns, one for each state at the time of Lincoln's death. Each of the columns is 33 feet tall.
Just inside the building doors is a large statue of Lincoln sitting on a chair. Two of his most famous speeches are carved in the wall behind him.
From the steps of the Memorial you can see the Washington Monument across the long reflecting pool. It is from these steps that Dr. Martin Luther King gave his "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963 to more than 250,000 people.
The Lincoln Memorial is pictured on the American $5 bill.
