Baba Yaga, the Forest Witch

Baba Yaga lived in an old dark forest. She was very old and very powerful. Some people feared her, but others believed she protected the forest. Her story is part of Russian folklore and has been told for many, many years.

Baba Yaga had a wooden house that stood on giant chicken legs. When she wanted to travel, the house could walk through the trees. Sometimes she flew through the forest sky in a wooden bowl. She used a long stick to steer as the wind rushed past her.

Baba Yaga had many magic powers. She could talk to animals and birds. She could make the wind blow and fire glow. At night, small lights sometimes floated around her house like tiny stars.

Baba Yaga did not like visitors, especially if they were rude or lazy. But she sometimes helped people who were polite and brave.

No one knows everything about Baba Yaga. Some say she was a dangerous witch who ate children. Others say the she kept the forest safe and still watches over it today.
