Long ago, during a winter that seemed to never end, the Elders warned the people about the Wendigo.
They said the Wendigo appeared in the coldest winters, when food was scarce. The Wendigo was tall and thin and moved silently through the trees. Some said its eyes glowed in the dark. Others said you never saw it at all - you only felt it watching.
At night, strange sounds echoed through the forest. Families stayed close to their fires. They shared what little food they had and reminded each other to be kind. The Elders said the Wendigo grew stronger when people became selfish or greedy.
One night, a hunter wandered too far from camp. The wind rose suddenly and the snow swirled around him. Then he heard a long hollow sound that was half wind, half whisper. He ran back toward camp and never looked behind him.
The next morning, the people found his tracks in the snow. Beside them were larger tracks, leading into the trees.
From that day on, no one ignored the Elders’ warnings.
When the wind moans through the forest on cold winter nights, people feel that the Wendigo is near. But if they remember to care for one another, the Wendigo fades back into the shadows.
