Long ago, in the quiet town of Sleepy Hollow, people loved to tell spooky stories about the Headless Horseman.
The Horseman was said to be a ghost who rode a fast black horse at night. He had lost his head long ago and carried a pumpkin instead.
Ichabod Crane was a schoolteacher who lived in Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod was tall and thin and he was very easy to scare.
One evening, Ichabod stayed late at a friend's house listening to scary tales. When it was time to go home, the road was dark and quiet.
As Ichabod rode his horse, he heard a clop, clop, clop behind him. He turned around, but no one was there.
Then the sound came again, even louder this time. Ichabod’s heart began to pound. He saw a shadow riding close behind him. It looked like a rider on a horse, but the rider had no head!
Ichabod urged his horse to go faster. The Horseman followed, holding a glowing pumpkin. Just as Ichabod reached the old bridge at the edge of town, he felt a whoosh as the pumpkin flew past him.
The next morning, Ichabod was gone. All that was found on the road was a broken pumpkin.
Did the Headless Horseman take him or did he just run away from Sleepy Hollow? No one knows.
