Rusty loved baking, and today he entered the town baking contest.
His loaf of bread sat in its pan, ready to rise. At first, it seemed normal. Then the dough began growing, much faster than it should. Two dark holes appeared like eyes. A long crack formed a mouth. The dough stretched and whispered, "More time..."
Rusty froze. "You... you’re alive!" he said.
The loaf lifted itself out of the pan, wobbling back and forth. Its soft voice hissed, "Not finished... Not perfect..."
Suddenly, the oven door swung open. Heat rushed out. Slimy dough and flour swirled through the kitchen like a cloud. In a panic, Rusty tripped and slipped. He was totally covered in flour and gooey dough.
The loaf lunged forward. The strands of dough stretched out towards him. Then, suddenly, the loaf collapsed back into the pan. The eyes and mouth vanished. Somehow, the pan slid into the oven and the door slammed with a loud BANG!
When the judges arrived an hour later, Rusty’s bread looked perfect. It won first prize.
But every baker who steps into Rusty’s kitchen now knows: If your dough keeps rising, don’t touch it or listen to it. Just stay calm and remember to wear an apron!
