Juno was the youngest explorer on her space team. Today she was sent to collect samples on Planet Vio, a strange world of purple sand and tall glowing rock towers.
At first it was quiet, until she heard it: CRUNCH. Her footsteps echoed behind her. She spun around. Nothing.
CRUNCH. CRUNCH. The sound followed her exactly - an echo, but too close and too real.
"Hello?" she whispered. A soft voice answered: "Hello."
Juno’s heart thumped. Echoes don’t whisper back.
A shadow stretched across the sand and a tall shape slid into view. It tilted its head the same moment she did, copying her movements perfectly. Juno stepped forward. It stepped forward. She stepped back. It stepped back.
Juno didn’t wait. She raced towards the shuttle. The creature's footsteps matched hers all the way. CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH!
When she reached the ramp, the footsteps stopped. She looked back. The creature was gone.
But ever since that day, anyone exploring Vio’s purple sands hears it too: A second pair of footsteps. Getting closer. And closer. And closer.
