What Is the Women's March on Washington?
The Women’s March on Washington took place on January 21, 2017, one day after the inauguration of President Donald Trump. It became one of the largest days of protest in United States history.
The purpose of the march was to send a message to the new president and to the world that the rights of women, immigrants, and people of all colors and religions were important. Many of the protesters disagreed with the ideas that Donald Trump put forward during his campaign and the days leading up to his inauguration.
The organizers were expecting 200,000 people to attend the Washington march. More than 500,000 showed up. Not only did this crowd outnumber the one at President Trump’s inauguration the day before, but it was entirely peaceful. Not a single arrest was made.
A number of “sister marches” took place in the US and around the world in support of the Women’s March on Washington. The number of people at those marches also went way beyond what was expected. The worldwide total reached more than 4 million. Marches were held on every continent - even Antarctica.
The millions of women (and men, children, and even some dogs) around the world who marched in the Women’s March on Washington hoped to make history. They succeeded. What started as a small Facebook event turned into a record-breaking global demonstration of peaceful protest.
