Rama and Sita

The Diwali Legend of Rama and Sita

Rama was the son of the king of Ayodhya. When Rama married the beautiful princess Sita, everyone expected him to become king. But Rama's stepmother wanted her own son to be king, not Rama.

The stepmother made the king send Rama and his bride to the forest for 14 years. They lived there with Rama's brother for 14 long years until one day when the evil god Ravana captured Sita and took her away to his island, Lanka.

Rama and his brother got help from the monkey-god, who was able to fly through the air to Lanka to find Sita.

On the island of Lanka, there was a big fight between Rama and the evil Ravana. With the help of the monkey-god and other animals, Rama was able to win the fight and rescue Sita.

Since 14 years had passed, Rama and Sita returned to Ayodhya. It was the night of the new moon and the people of Ayodhya lit diyas (oil lamps) in rows to guide Rama and Sita back to Ayodhya.

Rama was crowned king and his story is remembered every year on Diwali night.
