Whales in the Pool

This fishy story appeared on CBBC Newsround, a news site for kids, on April 1, 2006.

Whales abandoned in school pool

A school has had to call off its swim meet after two beluga whales were found using its indoor pool! The pair were found on Saturday morning at St. Jonah's school, as staff got the pool ready for the meet.

Principal Bill Igfish said, "All the kids were disappointed when we called off the competition. But they soon cheered up when they saw the whales!"

Police don't know where the two whales, who students have named Flim and Flam, came from, or how they got in the pool.

Officer Herman Melville said, "We're at a loss as to how the huge creatures were carried through the school, miles from the sea or any aquarium."

Student Nick O'Treal said, "I trained for ages for my race, but I'm not upset. I've made two new finned friends!"

Flim and Flam are in good shape, and will be taken to back to the ocean in a few days.
