Earth Hour is one hour every year when people around the world turn off their lights to show others that they care about the Earth and want to help solve the problem of climate change or global warming.
Human activities, such as burning coal to make the electricity to light our homes, change the air that blankets the Earth. The air keeps more of the sun's warmth near the Earth. This results in climate changes which can endanger the lives of every living thing on the planet.
Earth Hour was started by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. The next year many other cities and countries followed Sydney's example and Earth Hour became a worldwide event.
Earth Hour is usually observed from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the last Saturday of March.
