Designed as a pair or small group activity, for 2 to 6 players
A rules page and answers are included so that students can play independently,
making it suitable for inclusion in a literacy center
Preparation:
Print the following 16 pages: board, rules, player pieces, and homophone sentence cards.
Print in color and laminate the pages if you can, especially the board.
Cut out and fold the player pieces.
Cut out the 6 sentence cards on each page and fold each card along the dotted line
to hide the answer. These can also be used apart from the game as flash cards.
Store the board, rules, flattened player pieces, and sentence cards in a large manila
envelope or bag that can be used to hold the sentence cards when the game is played.
The title and image above can be cut out and glued or taped to the front of the envelope
to identify the contents.
Or make the preparation a hands-on student craft activity by providing black-and-white
printed pages for students to cut out, color, and glue to cardboard backing.
Put the Player pieces in a bag or box (Player #1 piece and Player #2 piece if two are playing; #1, #2 and #3 if there are three players, etc.)
Each player draws a piece and puts it on the START square. Player #1 will go first, Player #2 second, and so on.
Put all the Homophones Car Race Sentence Cards in the bag or box.
Player #2 draws a card, makes sure it is folded so that the answer is hidden, and shows the sentence to Player #1.
Player #1 picks one of the words to fill in the blank and spells it out loud.
Player #2 shows the answer, and if Player #1 is correct, the Player #1 piece moves ahead the number of
squares shown in the top left of the card. If it lands on a square with a message, the piece moves again according to the message.
If the answer is incorrect, the piece stays where it is.
Play continues, with Player #3 drawing a card, Player #2 answering, and if the answer is correct moving the Player #2 piece.
Cut out along solid lines, then fold along the red dotted lines, so that the piece will stand up like a tent.
